Safety and the Environment

ICL has a strong commitment to the preservation of the environment and the handling of our customer's products in a safe, responsible manner. Since inception, we have never received a citation for the violation of any international, federal, or local regulation relating to safety, navigational law or the ocean transportation of hazardous materials.

Our ships crew, port operations personnel, sales, and customer service staffs have been trained, tested and certified under the requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 33 and Title 49, and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code.

ICL has established risk management standards that ensure the safe transport of our customers' goods. Therefore, we recognize that certain dangerous goods offered for ocean transport create potential hazards. Hence, ICL will not accept for carriage aboard our ships any hazardous materials falling under the classifications of explosives, poison gasses, radioactive materials, infectious substances, hazardous wastes, and other selected UN numbers within the other IMDG classes that ICL deems to pose a greater risk to safety.

Independent Container Line Ltd. (ICL) has developed a security plan that has been reviewed by US Customs C-TPAT. This plan includes:

  • Procedures for providing security training for hazmat employees and other relevant employees
that focuses on the security issues associated with hazardous materials transportation.
  • An assessment of possible transportation security risks and appropriate measures to address the assessed risks.
  • Procedures to ensure personnel security, including measures to confirm the information provided by job applicants for positions involving access to and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Security measures implemented to address the risks associated with unauthorized persons gaining access to hazardous materials.
  • Procedures to assess the security risks that may occur in route from origin to destination.

High Security Bolt Seals

All containers stuffed by ICL must have a unique and verifiable high security bolt seal, meeting the criteria of ISO PAS 17712, affixed to it at all times during transport.

In compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) and C-TPAT regulations, ICL will recommend the use of high security bolt seals meeting the criteria of ISO PAS 17712

The security seal should be properly placed on the left locking bar on the right door or on a secure cam located on the bottom of the right door. The seal should be applied immediately after loading by a responsible party and the numbers should be recorded. The seal record should be maintained in a secure area for verification purposes. The intent is to keep the cargo secure throughout the supply chain. Seals numbers should be recorded when broken and any evidence of tampering should be reported.

If you have any questions or require more information please contact John Gillies, (804) 222-2220.
